Amaravati: YSRCP Chandragiri MLA Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy lashed out at the TDP government ignoring poll promise of total ban on liquor in the state. “Instead, the government is depending on liquor for the revenue,” he noted.

Speaking to newsmen at the media point in Assembly at Velagapudi on Thursday, accused the Chief Minister of minting money at the cost of public health.

“The state government has set the target of Rs 17,000 crore for the prohibition and excise department in the new financial year. Liquor sales have been gradually increasing for the last three years,” he stated.

Chevireddy pointed out that income from liquor sales was Rs.12,000 crore last year, while it was just Rs 4,497 crore before 2004.

Launching a tirade against belt shops, “Belt shops do not sell at MRP and they collect excess price from the customers. An estimated Rs 10,000 crore is being collected from the poor and middle class, who consume liquor,” he said.

He lamented 15 per cent of youth has the habit of drinking liquor and demanded that the ruling TDP should implement its election manifesto and control the liquor prices and prohibit the unauthorised shops.

He suggested the government should search for the alternative income source instead of depending on the liquor sales.
