Srikakulam: The only sugar factory run in cooperative sector at Amudalavalasa was sold away in 2003 by the then NDA government at Centre and TDP government in the state. Subsequently farmers under the cooperative body approached High Court and got order in favour of them.

However, number of questions clouded its revival, at this juncture Amudalavalasa MLA and government whip Kuna Ravi Kumar said that he was proceeding legally to revive the factory either in cooperative or in private sector in an interview with The Hans India.

“Sugar factory is main source of development for Amudalavalasa town and its surrounding areas as 680 persons directly, 2000 persons indirectly depend on it. Besides, 3,000 farmers are supplying cane,” he noted.Ravi Kumar said that in the wake of High Court orders against selling of the factory to a private person, the government initiated steps for the revival of sugar factory.

“We have sent a report to the director of sugars for appointment of a legal persons as per section 23 (A) of Co-operative Act 1904. After the appointment of the legal person, we will form a cooperative body with the farmers and collect share capital from the farmers,” he informed.

Referring to availability of cane, the whip said, “Sufficient sugarcane source is available and farmers will again start cultivation once the factory works resume.”Replying to a query whip admitted that it was true state government was planning to run sugar factories in private sector, “Farmers and employees of the sugar factory are ready to support government whether it will start in cooperative or private sector,” he averred.
