Amaravati: Irrespective of the Centre`s help, the state government will extend support to chilli farmers, Agriculture Minister Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy said here on Tuesday.

If the farmers sell their produce at Rs 6,500 per quintal, the government will provide an additional assistance of Rs 1500 per quintal.

Speaking to the mediapersons at the Secretariat at Velagapudi, he said the government will provide a maximum compensation of Rs 30,000 to each farmer.

The farmers who sell their produce below Rs 8,000 per quintal will be compensated for the difference amount, he said. The process will continue from April 20 to the end of June, he said.

The government will directly deposit the amount into the bank accounts of the farmers for which Rs 250 crore to Rs 300 crore has been earmarked, he said.

Announcing that a special agriculture action plan for achieving higher crop yield for the year 2017-18 will be implemented very soon, he said the government has fixed a target of 174 metric tonnes of paddy yield this year. He said the government has initiated measures to realise the objective.

The government has already made available 4.3 lakh quintals of seed against a total requirement of 9.68 lakh quintals to the farmers, he said.

Similarly, 10 lakh metric tonnes of fertilisers are available with the government and already 2 lakh metric tonnes have been kept with the Markfeds in all the districts across the state, he said.

While expressing displeasure over the low yield of paddy in North Andhra districts, he said he would hold a meeting with District Collectors of Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts soon.

An action plan would be evolved to increase the paddy yield in these districts, Somireddy said. He pointed out that AP is the only state in the country which is spending huge funds on the micro irrigation. This year we are going to spend Rs 400 crore on the micro irrigation, he said.

Terming the farmers loan waiver scheme implemented by the TDP government as a record feat, he compared it with those being implemented in Uttar Pradesh and Telangana.

While in UP, the BJP government has announced a loan waiver of Rs 30,000 crore for a population of 22 crore, where as in Telangana, which is a surplus state the government there waived loans up to Rs 16,000 crore.

But, in AP, which is having a population of 5 crore. the government has waived crop loans worth Rs 24,000 crore, he pointed out.
