Ancient tunnel unearthed
A tunnel constructed with stones was unearthed in Pedda Cheruvu (Sitamma Cheruvu) of Pedavegi village, 10 KM from here, on Wednesday. Locals feel that the construction was built in the Vengi kingdom’s remnant about 1,000 years ago. The Pedda Cheruvu which was the main source of water to the village was taken up under Neeru-Chettu scheme last year.
Eluru: A tunnel constructed with stones was unearthed in Pedda Cheruvu (Sitamma Cheruvu) of Pedavegi village, 10 KM from here, on Wednesday. Locals feel that the construction was built in the Vengi kingdom’s remnant about 1,000 years ago.
The Pedda Cheruvu which was the main source of water to the village was taken up under Neeru-Chettu scheme last year.
However, at present, the water body is laying dry. A group of youth, who visited the tank, happened to have stumbled upon a stone which led to the discovery of the stone-constructed tunnel. The youth and villagers brought this to the notice of government whip Chintamaneni Prabhakar, who reached Pedavegi on Wednesday to witness it. “Archeological department will be alerted regarding this historic marvel,” he said.
The MLA opined that this tunnel might be from the era of Vengi Kingdom.The well-shaped tunnel, which the villagers believe might led to the fort of Vengi Kings. According them, water from the Pedda Cheruvu, which situated outside the fort, is delivered through the tunnel.Vengi, known as Pedavegi was once the capital city of Vengi Kingdom.
During 1985-87, archeology department officials took up the excavations in this village and excavated many historic remains. Some of these sculptures were sent to the archeology department’s headquarters at Nagpur and some others were kept in Shiva Temple in Pedavegi. The discovery of the present tunnel might unearth another chapter in history.
