Eluru: A five-member team of the Central Water Commission (CWC) team visited Polavaram project site at Ramaiahpeta village in Polavaram Mandal, to inspect the ongoing works on Thursday.The team headed by Chief Engineer of CWC Shaikh Masood Hussain conducted a meeting with district collector K Bhaskar and engineering officials at the Transstroy project office on the hilltop.
During the review, the CWC members asked the officials about the problems with Chhattisgarh and Odisha over the Project. Replying to the queries of the team, the Engineer-in-Chief M Venkateswara Rao pointed out that the state government was ready to pay full compensation as per the new Land Acquisition Act but the displaced people of these states were not willing to accept the compensation. The team also enquired about the inter-state water dispute due to the project. It also reviewed on the Tribunal award, whether the works were going as per the designs approved by the CWC.
The Engineer-in-Chief informed the team that so far the Right Main Canal works were completed to a stretch of 174.48 km except in some places. The Left Main canal works were yet to be completed and that only 60.75 per cent works of it were completed, he added.It was decided to supply 23.5 TMC of water to Visakhapatnam for drinking and industrial purpose. The canal works overall 43.39 per cent completed.
The Copper dam will be completed by 2018 May, the Chief Engineer said.District Collector K Bhaskar explained the CWC Members through PowerPoint presentation that the relief and rehabilitation works were taken up in the affected mandals of Polavaram, Velairpadu and Kukunuru in the district and the higher percentage of displaced are tribals. As per the Land Acquisition Act 2013, the compensation was paid to the displaced people, he added.
The administration has taken up the evacuation programme in three phases and in first phase nine villages have been evacuated and rehabilitated them in the rehabilitation colonies constructed to the displaced people, he added.He explained to them that so far 80 per cent of the acquisition was completed.The members and chief engineers of CWC Sanjay Agarwal, RK Gupta, KL Das, AK Sivarajan,Na tional Projects Director Bhupesh Kumar participated in the review meeting.
