AP CM moots Rajasthan-type pipelines for irrigation

Amaravati: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu instructed the officials to study the erection of pipeline for supply of water for irrigation in the state of Rajasthan. Participating in two different review meetings with officials on Neeru-Prgathi and Polavaram irrigation project from his residence here on Monday, the Chief Minister said the evaporation losses could be avoided and expenditure also could be reduced by introducing pipeline water system in Rajasthan model.
He asked the officials to implement the pipeline system first for minor irrigation in the state. The officials were directed to dig farm ponds in horticulture sector. As many as 15 lakh borewells should be recharged, he said, and asked the officials to call for tenders for construction of check-dams which would cost above Rs 10 lakh. He suggested to the collectors to utilise the services of ISRO for protecting groundwater reserves by increasing availability at three metres level.

The Chief Minister asked the officials to ensure completion of the Purushottapatnam lift irrigation scheme by August this year. He cited the recently completed Srisailam-Machhumarri project which is a lifeline project for Rayalaseema districts. The officials were directed to prepare plans to link Gundlakamma canal to Penna river through Sangam barrage.
Answering a question by the Chief Minister, Polavaram chief engineer Ramesh Babu said that 3,386 staff had been working on the Polavaram project works. The Chief Minister said that the protection of workers in the project location was important and necessary security measures should be taken up for the purpose. He stressed the need to provide security to every worker on a priority basis.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister asked the officials to involve the people in the ongoing Neeru-Prgathi programme. The tanks in the villages should be cleaned, he said, and asked the officials to ready all available water storage points before the onset of rainy season.
