People urged to take part in conservation of water

Kurnool: Deputy Chief Minister KE Krishnamurthy made an appeal to people to take part in Neeru-Pragathi programme for construction of check dams and promoting water conservation. He said these words after performing bhoomi puja for the construction of a check dams at Kalva Bugga in Orvakal mandal on Tuesday. Addressing a meeting at Kalva Bugga, Krishnamurthy exhorted people to participate in the Neeru-Pragathi programme for conservation of water. It is the duty of every woman to dig a soak pit at her house and the responsibility of a farmer for digging a farm pond in his agriculture field. “We can live without food for some time but we can’t live without water as it is the main source of human life,” he said. He stated that disputes are taking place over water and cited Kaveri river water row between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka states.
Krishnamurthy said the state government took an initiative for conserving water through Neeru-Pragathi programme. We could able to enhance the groundwater level to 3.35 metres through various water conservation schemes, he stated. The Minister further stated that the Irrigation department and NREGS have jointly worked out a plan on desilting tanks, digging farm ponds and recharging of water harvesting structures and borewells. Krishnamurthy instructed the Collector to accord permission for constructing a check dam to a height of 2 metres on the lake near Kalva Bugga.
Satyanarayana said that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has introduced Neeru-Pragathi programme with an intention of conserving water which will lead to state progress. He said several water conservation schemes were introduced in the district at a cost of Rs 485 crore. An additional Rs 150 crore works were also taken up this year, he said.
Mallela Raja Sekhar said that several developmental works did not take place at Kalva Bugga. He urged the Deputy Chief Minister to construct a check dam with a height of 2 metres so to conserve surplus water. Panyam MLA Gouru Charitha Reddy, former Minister Erasu Pratap Reddy, MLC Silpa Chakrapani Reddy, former Minister KE Prabhakar, KDCC Chairman Mallikarjuna Reddy, DWMA Project Director Pulla Reddy, Irrigation Superintendent Engineer Chandrasekhar Rao and others also spoke.
