Amaravati: Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Nimmakayala Chinarajappa disclosed that the government has decided to strengthen border check-post to curb illegal transport of sand to other states.

Speaking to media persons at his chamber in Secretariat on Friday after holding review meeting with officials on sand policy, he said all the 26 check posts in the border areas of neighbouring states will be strengthened with additional staff.

Vigil will also be tightened on the internal roads which are frequently used by sand mafia for illegal transportation of sand to other states. Wherever sand reaches are there the concerned RDOs and DSPs should inspect them once in a week to check the illegal mining and monopoly by sand mafia on the reaches, he said.

As the maintenance of 347 sand reaches across the state is facing practical problems, it has been decided to maintain the ramps with NREGS funds, he said.

The police department had received about 4,000 complaints on illegal sand mining till now whereas 189 cases have been registered and 257 accused were arrested, he said.
