Amaravati: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu released water to Krishna delta from Krishna eastern canal head sluice near Prakasam barrage in Vijayawada on Monday. The Chief Minister released water after performing puja.
Speaking on the occasion, Naidu said that by releasing water early, the crops in the delta can be saved from cyclones. He said the century-old Krishna eastern delta canal head sluice served the farmers to irrigate 7.37 lakh acres paving way for the development of the region. He said from next year, water would be released from new regulator built near the old head sluice.
He said the government was able to release water to Krishna delta in June itself as 1.8 tmcft of Godavari water released from Pattiseema was diverted to Krishna river through Polavaram right main canal.
“Even though Opposition parties criticised Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme, the government is able to release water for kharif season ahead of schedule,” he added.
The Chief Minister said with the efforts initiated by the government in promoting farm ponds the underground water levels increased up to 90 tmcft so far. “Input subsidy to a tune of Rs 2,000 crore was distributed to farmers.
Prakasam barrage area and the banks of Krishna main canal up to RTC bus stand would be beautified by developing shopping complexes and hotels,” he informed.
Out of 1.8 tmcft of Godavari water released through PLIS, a total of 2,500 cusecs of water released from KE main canal including 1,000 cusecs for Ryves canal, 500 cusecs each for Bandar, Eluru and KE Branch canals.
