Visakhapatnam: Demanding repeal of GO 279 and implementation of ‘equal pay for equal work’ in accordance with the Supreme Court judgment, sanitary workers of eight zones (Ankapalle to Bheemili) under GVMC limit staged a rasta roko and besieged the house of HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao at MVP Colony in Visakhpatnam on Wednesday.

Earlier, to put forward their demands, the sanitary staff working in the municipalities and municipal corporations of 13 districts in the state formed a Joint Action Committee and gave a call for dharna on July 11, 12 and 13.

Speaking at the protest camp, CITU city secretary RKSV Kumar demanded scrapping of Go 279 as it is ruining the livelihood options of municipal workers and putting unnecessary burden on the public.

“The TDP government issued GO 279 for reaping profits to corporates and private contractors. Despite protesting against the GO since one year, the government did not take notice of our concerns,” said the CITU leader.

Even after three days protests, if the government fails to respond to their genuine demands, they would resort to indefinite strike, he warned.

Instead of resolving the issue, replacing the existing workers with new ones was a devastating move by the officials and the government, the union leader said.

Union leader Subba Rao urged the MLAs to discuss the issue with the Chief Minister and resolve the issue at the earliest.
