Amaravati: Principal secretary (medical and health) Poonam Malakondaiah said that the government had deputed 15 special medical teams to seven mandals of Uddanam region of Srikakulam district for identifying the kidney patients in earlier stage and to provide preventive medicare to them.

Giving a presentation on the steps taken by the government on Uddanam kidney diseases to the Harvard Medical School team, which met Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at the Secretariat on Monday, Poonam Malakondaiah said that the special teams, consisting of one doctor,
two lab technicians and testing kits for each had conducted medical tests for all the people who are of above 30 years age in 176 villages. As on April 15, 2017, the teams conducted diagnostic tests to more than one lakh people, where the doctors confirmed that 13,093 people are suffering from kidney problems, she disclosed. Thirteen-per cent of Uddanam population is suffering from kidney ailments, she said.
“We have established three special dialysis centres at Uddanam and 14 more dialysis centres will come up very shortly.
The government has appointed nephrologists at all the community, primary health centres in Srikakulam district and there is no need for patients to visit KGH in Visakhapatnam for diagnosis or treatment.
The state and the Union governments have jointly conducted a detailed study on kidney ailments at Gunupalli village of V Kottur mandal in Srikakulam district, in which a team of experts headed by Dr Sanjay Agarwal, Nephrology head of the department of AIIMS took part.
In its recent meeting, the state Cabinet has also decided to provide Rs 2,500 per month as pension for the kidney patients,” she said.
Brief about the steps taken on providing safe drinking water to the people of Uddanam, principal secretary for rural development K S Jawahar Reddy said that the government had initiated measures to establish RO (reverse osmosis) plants for providing safe drinking water to the affected village at a cost of Rs 17.30 crore.
The plants were launched on January 28, 2017 at Palasa, V Kottur, Sompeta, Kaviti and Kanchili mandals at a cost of Rs 10.69 crore on in the first phase. Seven RO plants will be established in two more mandals very soon, he said, adding that they were providing 20 litres of safe drinking water at for Rs 2 through this RO plants.
