Anantapur: CPI district unit staged a dharna at the Agriculture office here on Friday demanding immediate intervention of the state and central governments and come to the rescue of the farmers.
They also displayed poor quality of harvested groundnuts. Speaking on the occasion, party leaders Jaffer and Jagadish demanded the centre to treat the drought in the district as a national calamity. They demanded the centre to announce a special package to the district and implement the desertification prevention programme forthwith.
The CPI leaders called upon the government to increase the capacity of Handri-Neeva from 40 tmcft to 100 and release 100 tmcft to the district. Increasing of NREGS wages to Rs 300 per day, waiving of farm loans of the district farmers by the centre and introduction of fee reimbursement from LKG to PG by the central government are some of the demands of the CPI.
