NH-5 and NH-16 turn death traps
As many as 179 persons lost their lives and 849 were injured in the road accidents in Visakhapatnam district between January and July this year, according to the data of city police. On an average, at least, one person was being killed per day and four were being hurt in the district. The road mishaps that claimed maximum number of deaths occurred on NH-5 and NH-16 which pass through Vizag city. Some of the junctions prominent for accidents are Madhurawada, Anandapuram, Pendurty and Anakapalli.
Surprisingly, Visakhapatnam is one of the districts which is registering a huge number of road accidents in the state. In these mishaps, 469 were severely injured and 161 had a narrow escape with minor injuries.
Speaking to The Hans India, city Traffic Additional Commissioner Mahendra Pathrudu, said, "We noticed that major accidents in the district occurring due to over speeding coupled with drunken driving."
Incidentally, the number of accidents increased to 1,721 in 2016 from 1,618 in 2015 across rural and urban areas of Visakhapatnam. In addition to these factors, RTA officials pointed out that lack of awareness about road safety and carelessness on the roads are leading to the accidents and deaths.
In order to overcome the problem, the police department urged the parents to conduct counselling to the youth and asked the family members not to allow their wards go for helmet-less driving.
