Speaking to the media at Dr Ramachandra Reddy Bhavan here on Thursday, APRS state secretary P Peddi Reddy said that aqua processing units in Indukurupet mandal have been releasing hazardous pollutants into three important drains. About 62 habitations located in 22 gram panchayats are facing severe hardships with these contaminants being released by the firms, he added. More than 30,000 acres of horticulture and paddy crops were damaged due to the pollutants, he lamented.

“Many villagers were facing health problems such as skin ailments and other diseases due to the pollution. Though villagers had made several appeals to the local authorities but there has been no response from them in taking action against the processing units,” said Peddi Reddy.

AP Vyasaya Karmika Sangham state general secretary A Venkateswarlu stated that cattle in large number died after drinking water mixed with pollutants released by the processing units. ‘Sai Marine Export Private Limited, Star Agro Marine Exports, 5-Star Agro Marine Exports, DS Techno Feed Private Limited and other processing units have been releasing hazardous pollutants into 3 drains during night times, alleged APVKS general secretary.

He also warned that they would obstruct activities of the processing units if the government fails to take action against them. Managements of these firms have been contaminating Indukurupet mandal which is known as ‘Mini Konaseema’, he added.

AP Kaulu Rytu Sangham state general secretary P Jamulaiah said that vegetables which are being grown in these mandal have been contaminated with the impurities. He also warned that they would collect soil from every village for lab testing and block pipelines of the firms on August 24. AP Rytu Sangham district secretary P Sriramulu and leader TVV Prasad were also present.
