Nellore: Even after two and a half months after southwest monsoon had set in this year, district average rainfall reached to the normal level of the season with a slight deficit of 7.3 pc, still 16 mandals have recorded deficient rainfall and only 10 mandals received excess rainfall. As a result, Nellore farmers who started cultivation in only 40 pc area this year have pinned their hopes on the coming northeast monsoon.

Highlights:

  • SW monsoon fails to provide normal rainfall this year and the parching conditions resulted in cultivation in 40 pc area
  • 10 mandals record excess rain and 16 mandals witnessed scanty rainfall till Aug 15 from June 1

In fact, normal rainfall during this season from June 1 is 195 mm but it has been 180.8 mm till now with a deficit of 7.3 pc.
In June, it was 75.3 mm against the normal of 56.8 mm with excess and 59.6 mm against the normal of 86.3 mm at a deficient state in July.

Even during August month also, it has been rained 45.9 mm against month’s average of 51.9 mm, according to data provided by the Meteorological Dept. On an average, the status has been ‘normal’ with the recorded rainfall.

Actually, the situation is not encouraging in many mandals. Only 10 mandals received excess rainfall and 16 mandals have still been lagging behind with deficit rainfall.

Data shows that Kondapuram, Kavali, Jaladanki, Kaligiri, Vinjamuru, Atmakuru, AS Pet, Ananthasagaram, Kovur and Indukurpet mandals received excess rainfall due to intermittent heavy rains during the monsoon.

But, Allur, BR Palem, Sangam, Chejarla, Rapur, Podalakuru, Sydapuram, Balayapalli, Kota, Vakadu, Chittamuru, Naidupeta, Pellakuru, DV Satram, Sullurpet and Tada mandals registered deficient situation. Rest of the 20 mandals are falling under normal category.

With the typical situation of rainfall, groundwater level decreased further from 10.99 meters in July to 10.31 in August which is vulnerable than average groundwater level of coastal Andhra region which stands at 10.24 meters.

Still, a majority of the mandals located on the West and north-west parts of the district have been recording low rainfall activity and consequent groundwater levels.

Normally, they get rains due to cumulonimbus activity formed over western parts of the state that influence the region with sudden downpour.

Parching conditions have still been prevailed in these mandals even after commencement of the southwest monsoon this year.

“The situation this year has been a bit hopeful with at least some mandals receiving excess rainfall and the normal rainfall was also recorded in more than 20 mandals. So, we have to wait for the northeast monsoon which is crucial for the southern states and Nellore falls under its influence,” said a senior official from the Met Department.
