Kakinada: Former minister and YSRCP leader Mopidevi Venkataramana said the TDP government had betrayed both the Kapu and fishermen communities by not fulfilling its electoral promises made during Assembly elections.

Speaking to media at Padmanabha function hall here on Wednesday, he said the TDP had promised the status of Schedule Tribes for fishermen community if their party wins in the elections. However, it failed to keep its poll promise.

He alleged that the government did not give clarity on reservations for Kapu and fishermen community even after the government completion of its three-year stint. He said the GST has been increased from 12 to 18 per cent on nylon threads, ropes, fishing nets and other equipment used by fishermen.

He wondered over collection of GST on dry fish while there was no tax on export of marine products like fish and prawns. He said the government has been working in the favour of rich industrialists neglecting the poor.

According to statistics, he said major revenue source for the state has been coming from fisheries. Condemning the government’s statement on taking responsibility of fishermen community, he said no measures were being taken till date.

Kakinada city has the highest population of fishermen and TDP has started its election politics for KMC polls now, he added. He questioned the intention of government towards Kapu and fishermen community in providing reservations.
MLC Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose and former minister K Parthasaradhi were present.
