Amaravati: The inundation of Mumbai from heavy rains has once again raised questions on the safety of Amaravati capital city. However, the experts and government machinery are confident that flood security plans prepared by IIT Madras and consultants of Netherlands will provide a solution to the much-debated issue.

The IIT Madras and Netherlands consultants have prepared designs to avoid flood threat and water stagnation problem in Guntur, Vijayawada and Amaravati capital city. While, the plans are being finalized for Amaravati capital city and storm water drain works are underway in Vijayawada and Guntur cities. Though, the Centre has allocated funds for the storm water project, works are going on at a sluggish pace.

As per various studies, the three cities Vijayawada, Amaravati and Guntur may not face major flood risk, when the Krishna river and various canals in and adjacent to these cities are used to divert rain water. If the upstream states and local areas witness the heavy rains simultaneously, it will be difficulty to manage the flood.

The Madras IIT has designed plans to create better and suitable drainage system for Vijayawada and Guntur cities. Poor drainage system always led to disruption of transportation in Vijayawada and Guntur. As these cities assumed significance owing to their proximity to capital region, they have been selected for the storm water drain project and the Union urban development ministry has allocated Rs 1,000 crore for the works.

“The local body has launched the works but those would be completed in next three years,” said project manager Saravanan. He said that they have been trying to complete the works as early as possible.

The Madras IIT report suggested the VMC to take precautions to ensure that sewage does not enter drains designed for rain water. On the other hand, the study for avoiding flood threat from Krishna river is also under final stage. The experts committee of irrigation department, Netherlands consultants and Singapore planners made several suggestions.

The bunds of Krishna river and Kondaveeti Vaagu should be strengthened, says former EE of irrigation D Madhu. Recently the government has also started Kondaveeti Vaagu Lift Irrigation scheme to avoid flood threat to capital location.
