Srikakulam: TDP Palasa MLA Gouthu Shyam Sundar Sivaji decided to fulfil his vow to Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala on Saturday as he had succeeded in getting funds for the offshore project in his segment.

It may be recalled that Sivaji had decided on April 1 this year not to shave his hair and beard till he gets funds for the offshore irrigation project. Since then, he started work in this regard with the help of Minister for BC Welfare K Atchannaidu, and finally government allocated Rs 466 crore for the project. In this back drop, he decided to fulfil his vow and announced it on Friday at Palasa.

He grew his hair and beard for 161 days as on Friday and will shave it on Saturday.Former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy had laid the foundation stone for the offshore project in April 2008 at Regulapadu village in Palasa mandal at an estimated cost of Rs 127 crore.

The aim of the project is to provide irrigation water to 24,600 acres in four mandals -Palasa, Nandigama, VajrapuKotturu, Meliaputti- and also to provide drinking water to Palasa municipality. The offshore reservoir storage capacity is 1.858 and water for it would be diverting from Mahendra Tanaya river at Chapara village in Meliaputti mandal through a flood flow canal for 13.6 km and reservoir was being constructed at Regulapadu in Palasa mandal.

After completion of the project upland and tail end areas in four mandals would be covered and water is guaranteed for one crop during kharif season every year. Palasa municipal town has no standard water source to meet drinking water requirements and with the project, the problem would be solved permanently.
