Vijayawada: In all, 54 students of Rajiv Gandhi University of Technology (IIIT Nuzvid) were suspended on Monday on charges of ragging on the campus, where nearly 30 third year students were injured.

A 14-member committee, formed by the IIIT management conducted a detailed probe into the incidents of ragging and events like beating of third year students by seniors on August 29 this year.

The third and fourth year students have differences in recent weeks and were exposed when third year students were beaten black and blue by fourth year students on the night of August 29. The third year students have raised objection to the high volume of sound during the Ganesh Chaturthi by seniors.

It was also one of the reasons for erupting differences between the two sides. IIIT Director Veeranki Venkata Dasu told the media on Monday that the disciplinary action was taken on 54 students.

He said six students were expelled from the campus permanently and 13 students were suspended for one year.
Some students were suspended for two semesters and some others for two mid examinations. He made it clear that the management would not tolerate indiscipline on the campus.

Earlier, the District Legal Services Authority had served noticed on the IIIT Director Venkata Dasu and administrative officer A Ramakanth seeking explanation on ragging on the campus. The officials have taken the ragging issue seriously and acted on the 54 students on Monday. The students who were under the scanner were already sent home from the campus.
