Tirupati: With a focus on shaping of health care in the future in India, Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) is organising an Association of Indian Universities (AIU) round-table conclave of Vice-Chancellors of Health Sciences Universities and deans of medical colleges across India. The two-day conclave will be held at Sri Padmavathi Auditorium, SVIMS on October 10 and 11. This is for the first time a prestigious conference of this nature is being held in India.

Speaking to the media here on Monday, SVIMS Director-cum-Vice-Chancellor Dr TS Ravi Kumar said that when they approached the AIU with the proposal to organise a conclave of V-Cs of medical universities in the national interest, it has appreciated the initiative.

It will bring together the leaders in health care and education from the various health varsities in India, he said and added most of the states across India will be represented at the conclave. It will have four sessions dealing with governance and regulation in medical education, quality assurance and accreditation in health care, curriculum development, pedagogy, assessment and application of technology in medical education, and trends and issues in health science research, the Director said. Ravi Kumar added that a report will be generated by the AIU which may serve as a blue print for influencing policies and actions related to health, covering clinical care, population health, education and research.

The President of AIU Prof PB Sharma will deliver the presidential address. Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Director General (DG) Dr Soumya Swaminathan will deliver the keynote address.

She will be speaking on “The importance of health research in medical education”. Interestingly, the whole proceedings will be live streamed to all the universities and hospital systems, so that anybody interested may view the proceedings from their own premises. Ravi Kumar will be the organising secretary of the conference while Prof V Suresh of SVIMS is the coordinator.
