Amaravati: Chief Secretary Dinesh Kumar said gram panchayats which would make efforts to reduce the number of dropouts in schools and focus on public health would be given awards.

Addressing a review meeting at the Secretariat on Friday, the Chief Secretary said gram panchayats should create awareness among public to ensure deliveries in government hospitals. He told officials to take steps to reduce maternal mortality rate. He asked officials to see that drainage cleaning works were expedited to prevent mosquito menace.

The CS instructed Panchayat Raj officials to speed up the works of digging 35,000 borewells in different districts under NTR Jalasiri Programme and take up plantation in 4,000 hectares on hilly area.

He also held a review on MNREGS works and rural drinking water schemes. He expressed displeasure over the slow progress of MNREGS works, especially digging farm ponds in West Godavari, Guntur, Visakhapatnam and Srikakulam districts.
