With heavy inflows into dam from above, the water level reached full-reservoir level of 885 feet necessitating the officials to lift the crest gates.

Prior to lifting gates, SrisailamTemple Executive Officer Bharat Gupta conducted puja to the river according to the rituals. Major Irrigation Minister Devineni Uma, SrisailamMLA Budda Rajasekhara Reddy, Atchampeta MLA GuvvalaBalaraju (representing Telangana state) took part in the gates lifting ceremony.

Of the 12 crest gates, gate no. 6 and 7 were lifted to a height of 10 feet releasing water into Nagarjunasagar project. Water is being released after Srisailam Right Bank and Left Bank canal power houses to generate hydel power.

Devineni Uma lifted gate no 6 through a remote control while Budda Rajasekhara Reddy lifted gate no 7. Several people have gathered there to watch the spectacle.

The Krishna river was given aarti, kumkum, turmeric and flowers were offered amidst the chanting by vedic hymns. On the directions of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, a Jalaharati programme was conducted for tanks, rivers and ponds, Uma said. Consequently, the state experienced bountiful rains leading to improving the inflows into Srisailam dam, he added.

He said that Srisailam, Nagarjunasagar and Pulichintala projects irrigate ayacut lands bringing cheers to ryots of Telugu states. Budda Rajasekhara Reddy appreciated the Jalaharati Programme and noted that farmers in the Rayalaseema region are jubilant. Guvvala Balaraju also spoke.
