Tirupati: Over the years, journalism has deviated from its main philosophy of being pro-poor and it has created a vacuum in the field, opined veteran journalist Tankasala Ashok.

He participated as chief guest in a programme held on the occasion of 102nd birth anniversary of Vidwan Viswam. It was organised by the Department of Communication and Journalism of Sri Padmavathi Mahila Visvavidyalayam (SPMVV) and All India Radio (AIR), here on Saturday.

Ashok said, so many factors were working against being pro-poor which include both external and internal weaknesses that has deepened the vacuum further. He explained in detail how these factors are contributing their might in degrading the values.

In adverse situations, Vidwan Viswam stood for values and he was dedicated to his work. Even Gadicherla Harisavothama Rao, Kandukuri Veeresalingam and alike have also came across the various dichotomies both professional and society point of view, he maintained.

Tirupati AIR Director Dr Nagasuri Venugopal has dwelled at length on the life of Vidwan Vishwam. His feature ‘Manikya Veena’ became so popular which was first started in Andhra Prabha daily and later moved to weekly along with him and continued till he breathed his last on October 20, 1987. His ‘Penneti Pata’ was a mix of ancient and modern styles which was the first writing on the drought situation in Rayalaseema.

He said, Viswam was a rare combination of knowledge, creativity and philosophical thinking. There was no other personality in the field of journalism like that of Viswam. Journalism department Head Prof BN Neelima, who presided over the function, explained the intention behind organising birth anniversary.

She said that Vidwan Viswam and a few other journalists have upheld the core values of journalism like truth and integrity. At the end, Y Madhusudhan has sung Viswam’s Penneti Pata which was so melodious. Faculty members, Prof C Vani, Prof V Vijayalakhsmi, Prof Tripura Sundari, Prof Sobha Rani among others were present.
