Tirupati: Students seeking admission into Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Tirupati, in 2019 can enter in their brand new campus that will come up at Srinivasapuram of Yerpedu mandal, 20 km away from Tirupati.

Currently, the institute is located at the temporary campus of Sri Rama Engineering College in Tirupati. Speaking to media here on Monday, the new director of the institute Prof K N Ganesh, who took charge as regular director on November 1, said that architect would be selected this month to design a very imaginative and eco-friendly campus for the prestigious institution.

Stating that there was no other city in the country which has both IIT and IISER, he credited Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for his vision in selecting Tirupati for these two institutions. Also, the Chief Minister allotted land for both the institutes side by side so that they could function just as neighbours, he noted. The state government allotted 255 acres for the permanent campus of IISER.

IISER Tirupati is the sixth institute set up as an Institute of national Importance by the Union HRD ministry in 2015. IISER Pune, with its director Prof Ganesh himself, mentored IISER Tirupati. Prof Ganesh said by providing both teaching and research at under-graduate level, the IISER wold help producing quality scientists for the future needs. Students joining in IISER experience the research ambience from the very first day, he said.

The new director made it clear that IISER Tirupati will undertake lot of outreach activities including connecting to the schools and colleges in the city. “Eminent scholars will be invited to deliver lectures in the city. All these activities will help and motivate the young students to a great extent. A number of teacher training programmes will be organised to hone the skills of science teachers,” Prof Ganesh said.

Stating that the Act of Parliament gives them freedom in academic realm, he said they could design their own courses in an innovative way and award their own degrees.
