Human Rights Forum demands justice to kin
The Human Rights Forum (HRF) called upon the State government to ensure that families of farmers, who have committed suicide due to extreme distress and debts, are extended ex-gratia and rehabilitation as laid out in GO No 62.
Tirupati: The Human Rights Forum (HRF) called upon the State government to ensure that families of farmers, who have committed suicide due to extreme distress and debts, are extended ex-gratia and rehabilitation as laid out in GO No 62.
A six-member HRF team has visited seven villages two days ago in six mandals of two revenue divisions – Chittoor and Madanapalle - and looked into eight cases of the deceased and elicited facts from kin. The HRF team opined that the families of all eight deceased were eligible for the financial assistance and rehabilitation package.
Forum president UG Sreenivasulu said that, in all these cases it was established that there was correlation between farm related operations, economic distress and social humiliation eventually leading to suicide.
The GO 62 provides for financial assistance as an interim relief package to support such families which includes ex-gratia of Rs 3.5 lakh besides loan settlement up to a sum of Rs 1.5 lakh as one-time settlement to creditors.
The Forum was of the view that the implementation of the GO in the district was pathetic. The RDO-led committee has not even visited a single village and spoken with family members and local residents to ascertain facts, he said.
The forum demanded immediate steps should be taken to ensure that the 3-member divisional committee visits the villages, verifying facts and do justice to the families of farmers, who committed suicide. HRF State secretary UM Devendra Babu and State general secretary K Sudha and others took part in the visit.
