Tirupati: Red Sanders Anti-Smuggling Task Force (RSASTF) police have extended their intelligence surveillance in TamilNadu through Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sources against the red sanders smuggling activities.

Earlier the AP police has no contacts with DRI or any other customs officers of Chennai port.Presently RSASTF chief IG KanthaRao is making efforts to establish network of sharing information with DRI officials. Recently a team of task force personnel led by IG KanthaRao met the DRI higher officials on joint intelligence activity.

According to sources, the DRI officials had good information network on regular smuggling activities from TamilNadu. After identifying the importance of DRI information network in TN, the RSASTF officials requested them to share smuggling information with them. On Tirupati task force police request,the DRI Chennai officials responded positively and accepted to share the information.

The DRI had also increased surveillance in Chennai, RamnathaPuram, Tuticorin port and other harbours along the TamilNadu coast as part of curbing smuggling activities through shipping. The DRI staff took red sanders smuggling prevention as also one of the key task along with curbing drugs, gold and arms smuggling. In a recently held joint meeting, both DRI and RSASTF officials had exchanged information on various aspects of red sanders smuggling in both AP and TN. During the joint exercise,the DRI officials had conducted raids and seized more than 40 tonnes of sanders logs in two different places at Chennai and Kancheepuram and the value of seized logs is worth more than Rs 20 crore.

The DRI officials’ role was very useful in curbing the sanders smuggling at Seshachalam forest in Rayalaseema region through sharing information with task force police.Sometimes the DRI officials have been receiving good inputs from their TN informers regarding sanders logs loading in forest areas of Chittoor and Kadapa districts. In this context, the DRI officials had given their consent to share information with AP over the smuggling activities. RSASTF team had already set up separate intelligence cell for collecting secret information on smuggling activities.
