Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department will introduce houseboats in Krishna river soon on the lines of Kerala tourism boats. The house boats would be introduced in the back waters of the Prakasam Barrage. As many as 15 boats, each one worth Rs 1 crore would be launched in Krishna river in the first phase.

Notably, the government is planning to distribute boats to beneficiaries of scheduled castes by providing bank loans. The tourism department would supervise marketing and tickets sale from its own network. But the beneficiaries can select the boats as per their plans within the guidelines of tourism department.

The tourism corporation would bear 15 per cent amount as subsidy in the total cost of boat. House boats would be a milestone in the tourism history of Amaravati. Tourism department secretary Mukesh Kumar Meena cleared the proposal at a meeting with officials of tourism department on Thursday. But the tourism department wants to introduce the scheme by involving SC and BC Corporations.

The tourism department aimed at introducing floating house boats in Krishna river as early as possible, said Mukesh Kumar Meena. The project would give a good experience to tourists of Amaravati, said tourism authority chief executive officer Himanshu Shukla.
