Eluru: The police on Sunday fished out bodies of four engineering students who met with a watery grave when they went for a swim in an irrigation tank in Bhogapuram in Pedavegi mandal in the disrict on Saturday evening.

According to police, the students were identified as: Gummi Vijayashankar (22) of Chintalapudi, Kalidindi Harikrishnaraju (22) of Kothuru village in Kamavarapukota mandal, Kota Sai (20) of Chintalapudi village (all West Godvari) and Ankala Sai Kiran Parasuram (22) of Kondangi village in Kalidindi Mandal in Krishna District.

They are the students of Ramachandra Engineering College at Vatluru here. All the four abstained from the classes and went to Bhogapuram on Saturday. They played in a garden there for some time and went to the irrigation tank in Bhogapuram village.

Meanwhile, when the four students did not return home, even late in the night, their parents began searching for them.

They called the engineering college officials, co-students but could not get any information.

On Sunday morning, a gardener working near the garden found the college bags and dresses of the students. Then the gardener noticed a body floating in the water. He immediately informed the matter to the Pedavegi police.

Immediately, Eluru DSP K Eswara Rao rushed to the spot with other police officials and fished out the bodies from the tank. The police searched the bags of the students to trace the identity.

They found the identity cards issued by the Ramachandra Engineering College. Meanwhile, on information, college Principal P Sanjay reached the spot and told the DSP that the four students abstained from the college on Saturday.

"After seeing the scroll on TV that Ramachandra College students drowned in the water tank, I immediately came here," he added.

The police later sent the bodies to the Eluru Government Hospital for postmortem and then they were handed over to the parents.

Of The victims, three students Vijaya Shankar, Harikrishnamraju and Saikiran Parasuram were in 3rd-year mechanical engineering. Kota Sai is studying ECE second year. Meanwhile, the police seized college bags, mobile phones and other material including some liquor bottles from the place.
