Vijayawada: With a view to quench the thirst of Chennai city residents, the Andhra Pradesh government on Saturday released 3.33 tmc of water from the Krishna river.

The move came in after the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department chief engineer wrote a letter to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in December last year urging the state government to release water to meet drinking water requirement of the city.

The Tamil Nadu government stated that the present storage of four reservoirs is only 46 percent which of the scanty rainfal during the north-east monsoon.

Andhra Pradesh Water Resources Department Secretary Shashi Bhushan Kumar issued an order on Friday night permitting the NTR Telugu Ganga Project chief engineer to release 3.33 tmc of water from Kandaleru reservoir to Poondi reservoir.
