Vijayawada: Defying the police orders and the High Court instructions, organisers began cock-fights on a massive scale in many parts of Krishna district on Sunday to mark the Sankranti celebrations. Cock-fights were organised in Nuzvid, Musunuru, Kankipadu, Gudivada, Chatrai, Agiripalli, Mylavaram and Pedapulipaka on the outskirts of Vijayawada. Crores of rupees were changed the hands due to the bettings.

The organisers made preparations long time ago by giving training to the roosters and high protein diet to win the bloody fights where the birds die within minutes. Punters also made elaborate arrangements to collect and transfer the money at the arena.

Cockfight rings were very busy with thousands of visitors came from other districts also. The police initially tried to resist the cock-fights till Sunday morning but left the villages paving the way to continue the fights, which are the part of tradition in the Coastal districts particularly in Krishna, West and East Godavari districts.

At Eedupugallu village in Kankipadu mandal, the organisers initially began the cock-fights without knives. Since afternoon, they tied the knives to the roosters, which gave momentum to the game. Thousands of people gathered in the village to celebrate the festival by watching cock-fights, playing gambling and eating variety of dishes arranged in the makeshift stalls.

Similarly, Janardhanavaram village in Chatrai mandal also attracted a large number of cockfight lovers and punters. In Nuzvid mandal, rings were arranged in Sunkollu, MN Palem and Mukkallapadu villages. Thousands of people gathered in these villages on Sunday.

The bettings will intensify on Monday as there were no police to check the game. Cock-fight arenas were also arranged in Sobhanapuram and Adavinekkalam villages in Agiripalli mandal. Similarly, cock-fights were arranged in Gudivada, Mylavaram, Kaikaluru and other mandals in the district on Sunday. And these fights will continue one or two more days.
