Pithapuram: Belt Shops ‘Nirmula Samiti’ comprising representatives from various NGOs and parties on Thursday staged a dharna at Ravichettu Centre here demanding steps to check belt shops and implementation of assurances to control liquor consumption.

Addressing the gathering, samiti leader Madhepalli Govind Rao appealed to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to honour his promise of curbing liquor sale and consumption.

He expressed anguish over youth wasting their valuable time loitering near the belt shops. Slamming the officials entrusted with the task of checking belt shops failing in discharging duty, Govind Rao warned the samiti would intensify its agitation against liquor consumption if the officials failed to discharge their duties efficiently.

Anti-liquor campaign committee leader Suryanarayana said that liquor shops were ruining the lives of poor families. “It is shameful that governments are being run on the revenue earned from liquor,” he quipped.

Samiti leaders Koneti Raju, J C Vasu, L V R Manikanta, Allavarapu Nagesh, Akkireddy Srinivas, Madapu Daivam, Karanam Viswanadham, Gatti Srikrishna Devarayulu, Kommineedi Rajendra, Kunchumarti Swamy, Eegala Trimurthulu, Balapalli Anil, Mammidi Srinu, Anala Sudarshan and K Appa Rao were present.
