Amaravati: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced that Navayuga Engineering Company will take up Polavaram project works from February.

Addressing Collectors’ conference here on Thursday, the Chief Minister said that Navayuga company expressed its willingness to take up the works at old price level only. “As the company agreed to take up the works without any increase in price, we decided to entrust the works to Navayuga company from February,” Naidu said.

The water resources department invited tenders a few months ago for selecting new contractor to entrust works from block 1 to 30 of spillway and works of spill channel. But, the Union Minister for Water Resources Ministry wrote a letter to the State government in November 2017 directing it to stop the tender process and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari set a target of 7,000 cubic meters of concrete works per day to project contract agency Transstroy for a month.

As the Transstroy did not meet the target, the state requested the Polavaram Project Authority to give permission to open tenders as per schedule, the tender of January 12. But the PPA, in a recent meeting, suggested the state to explore alternative ways instead of going for new tenders.

In this backdrop, the Navayuga has come forward to take up the Polavaram works. Chief Minister said a season was wasted due to the letter from Centre to stop works and it took another month to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to understand the situation at the project. “So, we will entrust the works to Navayuga by February fist week after completion of process in this regard,” Naidu said.

The Chief Minister told officials that projects to interlink Godavari and Penna rivers must be planned and conceptualised at the earliest. Other projects under contemplation are construction of barrages like Neradi Barrage and other lift irrigation projects.

Meanwhile engineer-in-chief M Venkateswara Rao said in the conference that all 29 priority irrigation projects would be completed and inaugurated by March.

He listed the names of six projects that have been completed and are ready for inauguration, Pogonda reservoir, Gorakallu reservoir, Owk tunnel, Pulikanuma LIS, Pedapalem LIS and Chinasana LIS.
