Srikakulam: After cultivating bad habits and deciding to make a fast buck, a youth turned into a thief and started lifting ornaments from two flats in an apartment complex in the town but was finally arrested by the police of the central crime station.

Presenting the accused before the media at a press conference here on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr C M Trivikrama Varma said the accused was identified as Mamidi Tirupathi, a native of Gangada village in Balijipeta mandal of Vizianagaram district who settled down at Gajuwaka in Visakhapatnam.

He said that Tirupathi’s father is a push cart vendor and the accused was addicted to bad habits. In need of money, he chose to become a burglar and stole ornaments from locked houses. The accused was caught by police while disposing the lifted ornaments, the SP added.

The accused lifted gold and silver ornaments from two flats in an apartment in Srikakulam on June 25, 2017. Both the victims of house break are bank employees, residing on the fourth and first floors. And the incident took place when the ban employees went to a pilgrimage.

After noticing the locked houses, Tirupathi broke open windows and decamped with the ornaments. The police have recovered 26 tolas of gold and 2 kg of silver ornaments from the accused, SP added.

The Deputy SPs of CCS, law and order, special branch, K Venugopal Naidu, V Bhima Rao and M Krishna Murthy Naidu were present on the occasion.

The SP lauded efforts of CCS ASI K Krishna Rao, constables, NSP Raju, E Tarakeswar Rao, KT Raju and M Kranthi Kumar in nabbing the accused and recovering the stolen property.

The Superintendent of Police urged the people to install closed circuit (CC) cameras at group houses and apartments to avoid thefts and to catch the offenders fast.
