Vijayawada: Municipal commissioner J Nivas on Monday inspected the Eluru canal cleansing works in Poornanandam pet and instructed the officials to remove the plastic waste and garbage piled up the canal.

The VMC has taken up the removing of plastic waste and garbage from the three canals of the city, Eluru canal, Ryves canal and Bandar canal.
Commissioner drafted 500 sanitation staff for cleaning the canals.

Anti-larvae operations will be taken up in the canals to check the mosquito menace. It may be recalled residents living adjacent to canals had been facing many problems with mosquito menace.

Commissioner Nivas asked the staff to remove the plastic waste as early as possible by using JCBs. He also inspected the canal beautification works taken up by Eluru locks to Budameru bridge junction.

The commissioner expressed displeasure over the attitude of people dumping the garbage in the canals. He asked the staff to collect penalty from the people if they throw the garbage or plastic bags in the canals. He levied penalty of Rs 10,000 on a private school on G S Raju Road for throwing garbage on the road.

The amount was deposited in the VMC. He also convened a meeting with the traders asking the latter to avoid using banned plastic carry bags which are responsible for piling of garbage in the canals.
