Vijayawada: The state government is contemplating to construct commercial complexes in various vacant sites and premises of the government offices in the city. Earlier, the government made an effort to construct a commercial complex at Swaraj Maidan popularly known as PWD Grounds, but it has not been materialised so far.

Now the government is finalising similar plans to construct commercial complexes at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium, Municipal Guest House and the office premises of Krishna district Panchayat Raj and Rural Water Scheme (RWS).

The vacant lands and offices are centrally located in the city and lands are very expensive. The government has plans to convert the sites for multipurpose usage but the political parties especially the Left parties are opposing the government’s move.

Indeed, the government could not go forward towards construction of commercial complex at PWD grounds though it was proposed two years ago. But now the officials of various departments proposed plans to construct commercial complexes on their office premises.

As per plans, the Panchayat Raj and RWS department is having a huge space opposite PWD Grounds on Bandar Road. Already, the district Panchayat Raj department proposed a commercial complex for office needs and commercial usage.

Actually, the Panchayat Raj Guest House and Zilla Parishad Chairman’s guest house are also in the part of the land stretch belonging to Panchayat Raj and RWS departments. If the site is converted for commercial purpose, the Panchayat Raj Guest House should also be demolished due to both structures are on the same premises.

The plan may get opposition from followers of late Kakani Venkata Ratnam. The Jai Andhra leader and former minister died at the guest house in the peak movement of the agitation for separate Andhra.

A senior officer of Panchayat Raj department on condition of anonymity said that a proposal for demolition of some part of guest house has been sent to the government and decision is yet to be taken up in this regard.

Likewise, the state government finalised a plan to construct a commercial complex by demolishing the corporation guest house. The site is also centrally located in the city and adjacent to Panchayat Raj Guest House. The local body proposed a plan to construct a complex and also guest house to generate income for the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation.

But the Left parties are opposing the government’s plan. CPM State Committee member Ch Babu Rao said that the government was making plans to hand over the costly lands to private parties. He said that the costly properties should be protected and developed by the government only.
