Vijayawada: Kanaka Durga temple flyover construction works are unlikely to be completed before February/March 2019 due to slow progress of works. Rs 282 crore mega flyover project was started in 2015 with a view to complete before Krishna Pushkaralu in August 2016.

Due to technical and administrative reasons, only 60 per cent works were completed till now. Lakhs of people living at One Town area, Ajit Singh Nagar area are suffering due to slow progress of works.

The 5.2 km project was sanctioned by the Union government to address the traffic problem in the city. The state government had spent nearly Rs 100 crore for land acquisition as well as shifting of utilities like drinking water pipelines. Flyover length is about 2.3 km. Three km road was widened at Krishna Lanka as a part of the mega project.

Of the total 47 piers designed for the bridge, 41 have been completed and laying the super structure works also started at Kummaripalem Junction. It is expected it will take at least one year to complete the laying of super structure, which include wings and spine.

Laying six more piers is a gigantic task because these piers are in Y shape and are very big in size, said a senior official supervising the works. He said utmost care should be taken for laying the Y shape piers. A detailed technical study should be conducted before laying the very big piers, he added.

The flyover will have six lanes. Besides, four-lane highway road will be developed under the structure. Totally, 10 lines are built between the Krishna River and Durga temple hill for passing of vehicles.

The officials informed Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu that efforts were on to complete the flyover construction works by February/March 2019. But, the ground reality is entirely different and it may take at least one year to complete the works, admitted a senior official.

The flyover will have cross over the Krishna main canal, which supplies irrigation water to Krishna eastern Delta in kharif season, which will begin next month. Flow of water may hamper the flyover construction works in Krishna Canal.

Super structure will come over the piers of the canal. Two under passes’ works are yet to be completed. Only consolation to the denizens and the officials is highway widening works are almost completed at Krishna Lanka.

Flyover works upstream of Prakasam Barrage are going on at a snail’s pace causing hardships to the residents of One Town and Ajit Singh Nagar. Heavy vehicles are diverted from Gollapudi to Inner Ring Road at Ajit Singh Nagar and Gunadala.
