Vijayawada, a city with a population of over a One million has bagged the first position in ‘India’s cleanest big city’.

Climbing up the ‘Swacchta’ ladder, Vijayawada outdid its earlier rankings of the past three years by emerging as the cleanest city in the country.

In terms of sanitation and cleanliness, special care has been taken by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation and even CCTV cameras were set up to monitor all the waste collecting areas.

Waste from roads was collected from time to time for which special arrangements were made. Others measures taken to transform the city include beautification of canal banks, modernizing the public toilets, establishing fountains and greenery, segregation of dry and wet waste, decorating walls with scenic paintings, developing open places as parks, and building toilets in municipal schools.

Also, compost yards were set up and wet waste is now being converted into compost. Two dustbins - for dry and wet waste were distributed to almost all the households in the city. Vijayawada Municipal Corporation bought machinery worth Rs 40 crore for the purpose of cleaning, sanitation and sewerage purposes.
