Tirupati: On the instructions of the newly appointed Municipal Corporation Commissioner V Vijay Rama Raju, the civic staff has initiated anti-encroachment drive in the temple city on Friday.

City residents and pilgrims visiting the city are forced to walk on roads as pedestrian paths were occupied by vendors and petty businessmen, leading to traffic jams and road accidents.

Especially, pilgrims having difficulties to walk in crowded localities like railway station, RTC central bus stand, Srinivasam and Vishnu complexes, Tirumala bypass road, Alipiri and Ghandi roads.

According to sources, second-rung ruling party leaders are encouraging vendors to run businesses on pavements by collecting money from them in the name of providing protection from cops and civic officials. The eateries on pedestrian paths are posing threat to people as they are cooking food items without safety measures.

The civic chief has constituted a special task force team for clearing pedestrian paths. He also instructed the staff to implement prohibition of sticking cinema posters on walls in open places and to prevent dangling of TV cable wires on the streets in the city. Speaking to The Hans India, Assistant City Planner Gunashekar said that they are clearing encroachments on pavements as per the Commissioner’s orders.
