The body of missing woman Galla Nagamani was traced at Komaragiripatnam under Mummidivaram Assembly segment in East Godavari district on Sunday evening. The bodies of six school students K Ramya, P V Manisha, S Srija, S Priya, P Anusha and P Suchitra are yet to be traced.

The authorities said they have not yet found any survivors in the river. Searching operations have been taken up in the river between Yanam and Pasuvullanka for a distance of 20 km. As many as 10 speed boats, 71 NDRF and SDRF staff, 30 fire personnel, 10 swimmers and 20 fishermen boats have been pressed into service.

Two navy helicopters are kept at the airport to take off at short notice once the condition of weather improves. The search teams are facing difficulty as the river is in spate and, making matters worse, high velocity winds haven blowing throughout the day.

The fishermen boats are fitted with the GPS system and the boat men are given wireless sets to convey information to the authorities if they find any survivors. Doctors were kept ready at Yanam and Pasuvullanka to attend to survivors incase search teams bring them to shore.

A fishermen Bhairavudu said it will take some time to find the missing persons. If in the unfortunate event of death, there is no way bodies would come to surface in fresh water unlike in salt water. He advised the officials to search at Bhairavalanka also as there is a scope to find the missing people.

V Venkateswara Rao of Serilanka has said that the boat drowned in just a matter of five minutes after it started from Pasuvullanka. As many as 30 passengers boarded the boat but the boat man could not control the boat in the face of powerful winds buffeting it and hit the pillar of the bridge under construction which led to the boat capsize.

G Madhubabu, a worker involved in the construction of the bridge, said he saw the boat drowning after it hit the pillar. “We immediately rushed in our company’s boat and saved 10 passengers,” he said. As many as 32 passengers were travelling in the boat that was on its way from Saladivari Palem to Pasuvullanka when it capsized.

Twenty-five passengers were rescued. Travelling by boat is the only means of transportation from Saladivaripalem, Kamini and Serilanka to Mummidivaram and Polavaram. Speaking to The Hans India over phone, Deputy Chief Minister Nimmakayala Chinna Rajappa said that so far no bodes were traced and the inclement weather was hindering rescue operations.
