Tirupati: Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) and Harvard Global Health Institute (HGHI) have agreed for mutual collaboration in the field of healthcare. SVIMS Director cum Vice Chancellor Prof TS Ravikumar, during his visit to Harvard on July 17-19, discussed various aspects with the officials there and found areas for mutual cooperation.

It was decided to incorporate new ideas into the next interaction of Harvard X Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) of “Improving Global health through Quality” which can be made available to all healthcare providers and students in India. Another area for collaboration is in the development of National Patient Safety Cell and he has submitted a proposal to ICMR Department of Health Research.

HGHI Director Prof Ashish Jha lauded the proposal and extended the expertise of Harvard in shaping a robust patient safety programme. The realm of Population Health was the other area for mutual collaboration.

“Harvard has significant depth and breadth in this aspect, and it will be an opportunity to harness their collective expertise for developing longitudinal population cohorts, that will yield multi decade understanding of disease transitions in populations of India”, observed Prof Ravikumar.

While Harvard will explore a coalition of experts from that institute, SVIMS expects to put together an Indian team to enable this population science project. Prof Ravikumar invited HGHI leadership group to India for follow up discussions and project launch during the rest of 2018.

During the visiting scholar programme, he gave a seminar to the greater Harvard community, entitled “Engaged Leadership to Transform the Quality of Care in Healthcare: lessons from India”.
