The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation GVMC has bagged Smart City Project Award social aspects for its outstanding achievement in implementing Smart Campus in the corporation schools

Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has bagged Smart City Project Award (social aspects) for its outstanding achievement in implementing Smart Campus in the corporation schools.

To attract more number of students and parents, GVMC Commissioner M Hari Narayanan planned to develop the schools and asked the Administrative Staff College of India to submit a report on how to develop the schools.

The officials of the Administrative Staff College of India visited the city to study the existing infrastructure and what are the requirements of schools and submitted a report to the GVMC. The Academic Staff College also told GVMC to maintain hygiene in the schools and develop greenery.

The report stressed that the school campus should be developed with infrastructure to attract both students and parents. Based on the study report, the Commissioner directed the officials to develop all the 16 schools without any compromise by June first week.

He asked the officials to complete all the works, including flooring with tiles, paintings, new blackboards, plantation, repair and digging of borewells, toilet blocks, fans and necessary playing equipment.

The new campus to the students should be ready by June 12 when the new academic year starts, he said. He said the works were taken up at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore and completed in the stipulated time.

He said the schools should have purified drinking water facility, toilet blocks with running water, fans and lights and the surroundings of playgrounds should be developed with good shade and avenue plantation. Now, all the schools in the city were maintained on par with the corporate campuses, he added.

After observing the infrastructure in the schools, the Central government selected the GVMC for the Smart Cities award under promoting social infrastructure in the schools.
