Vijayawada: When many government educational institutions particularly the schools and colleges are struggling to fill the seats, the SRR & CVR Government Degree College in Vijayawada is attracting a large number of students as more than 90 percent seats for various courses are filled during the last few years.

Founded in 1937 by Sri Raja Rangaiah Apparao Bahadur, zamindar of Nuzvid, the college is one of the oldest and biggest degree colleges in the state.

However, it lost its importance and recognition due to the advent of corporate colleges after 2000.

After many years of struggle, the SRR and CVR government college is now trying to regain its glory by imparting quality education and achieving good results in Degree and PG courses.

The PG students have got 80 percent and degree students have achieved 88 percent results in the academic year 2017-18 and have been trying to improve more this year.

Nearly 100 teaching staff with 72 of them regular is imparting education and making the students to be more competitive to face challenges in the job market.

Hundreds of students belonging to poor and middle class are getting benefited with the imparting degree and PG courses on nominal fee.

The college is offering degree courses with the fee between Rs.1770 and Rs.4930 and P.G. Courses between Rs.9,600 to Rs.16,400 a year.

College principal Velaga Joshi with the support of staff has been trying to transform the college into knowledge hub.

Now, the main focus of the college management is to improve the educational standards and help them get jobs in job melas being organised in the college by various agencies.

"Unlike the students of other colleges, the students of SRR & CVR college take part in social service activities like doing service during Dasara celebrations atop Indrakeeladri, Krishna Pushkaralu, traffic regulations along with the police, plantation programmes like Vanam-Manam and Swatch Bharat mission events," said M Hari Prasad, NSS Coordinator and History lecturer. He said the extra curricular activities are very useful to the students.

The college has massive strength of 2,200 students in degree courses and over 400 studying post graduation courses.

College principal Velaga Joshi said the SRR & CVR college has tie up with the Jawahar Knowledge Centre and has been trying to improve English language skills in coordination with the British Council.

Notable point is hundreds of students of the SRR degree college secured jobs and settled in various companies in recent years. The college is offering 22 degree courses with different combinations and eight PG courses.

Principal Joshi said the college is offering diploma courses in French and Arabic and is also planning to introduce more courses to impart different types of education.

Spacious playground, library and cultural activities are added advantages to the students.

The college management has requested the State government to sanction Rs.8 crore for construction of mega auditorium to host cultural events, college day celebrations and other programmes.

The college is introducing virtual and digital classes in the college to compete with other corporate colleges.
