Vijayawada: Atheist leader the late Goparaju Lavanam, along with his wife Hemalata, had strived for the reformation and rehabilitation of criminals and for the abolishment of Jogini system in society by exerting pressure on the government to enact necessary laws, said several speakers while addressing the third death anniversary of Lavanam at the Atheist Centre here on Tuesday.

One of the speakers Hari Subrahmanyam said that Lavanam was instrumental in conducting international atheist conferences and spread of atheism by visiting various countries in Europe.

He said that Lavanam had proposed alternatives for solving various problems in non-violent method. “Lavanam had propounded constructive atheism and spread it,” he added.

Dr Goparaju Vijayam said that Lavanam and Hemalata Lavanam had strived to eradicate caste and religion and for the construction of post-religious society. He recalled that he was one of the recipients of Jamnalal Bajaj award in recognition of his service to society. Dr Maru, Linde, Ella, Charlotte and Florence from Belgium also spoke.
