Vijayawada: With an aim to share knowledge on the new and advanced Joint Replacement System (JRS) and quick recovery techniques on joint replacements, Dr Robert Harvey, orthopedic surgeon from United Kingdom visited Manipal Hospital here on Thursday.

He said that a new and revolutionary JRS was presently available for patients who have been suffering from advanced stages of osteoarthritis and require a joint replacement procedure.

“One of the key benefits of this system is that it can be customised to suit individual body types based on their physical dimension.

Most importantly, this system also offers patients the benefit of a very quick recovery in addition to enabling natural movement of the knee joints thereby restoring the original movement of the limbs once the surgery is done.

Until recently, joint replacement has always been a matter of concern for patients suffering from osteoarthritis,” he added.

Dr Jagadeesh Nallamothu, joint replacement surgeon at Manipal Hospital said that this orthopaedic implant technology has evolved due to continuous research to a great extent ensuring greater stability, smooth transition during gait and extended longevity of the implant.

“There has been one major challenge that all the surgeons faced, which is the limitation in implant sizes.

However, this custom fit knee system offers the surgeon more size options by giving them a chance to choose the size of the implant as per the size of the patient rather than planning the surgery based on the pre-existing sizes available in traditional implants,” he explained.

Dr Sudhakar Kantipudi, Unit Head- Manipal Hospital said that the advanced knee system was certainly a big step in the right direction.

“This system is still very new in India and hence the awareness about this was less.

However, this is very well suited for the Indian patient’s more rigorous lifestyle, particularly with kneeling and squatting.

It has been designed to accommodate 150 degrees movement,” he added.

Dr Manoj Kumar, chief of clinical services said, “This tailor made knee is as close to nature as the technology can offer.

Patients not only get a good implant fit and better stability hence able to recover very fast post-surgery.

With this patients can walk within a day and enjoy the benefits of a technology that gives the patient an implant very close to the natural anatomy, thereby giving the patient.”
