Visakhapatnam: Restart a Heart Day was conducted as part of GITAM Institute of Medical Science and Research (GIMSR) COLS Training (compression only life support) programme here on Tuesday at GITAM campus.

Cardiac arrest is a community issue, but many people simply do not have the skills and confidence to step in and help and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training would  provide vital skills to save a life, said by GIMSR Medical Superintendent Dr Shyama Prasad.

He briefed that the CPR is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions often with artificial ventilation in an effort to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest.

The CPR could prove crucial in keeping the victim alive until ambulance crews arrive, he added. Following the Indian Resuscitation Council Guidelines, the training sessions were organised by GIMSR medical team under the supervision of medical superintendent. GITAM Vice-Chancellor Prof MS Prasada Rao, Registrar Prof M Potharaju participated.
