The hatchback products 310 PS and 380 Nm of torque. The VW Golf GTI Clubsport S, the hottest ever hatchback to be created by the German automaker, has smashed the Nurburgring Nordschleife lap record for front-wheel drive cars. In the process, it also proved to be faster than a few big RWD players like the BMW M4 and the 707 PS Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat.

The Golf GTI Clubsport S lapped the full course in a scorching time of 07:49:21 as against the Honda Civic Type R’s time of 7:50.63. The hatchback is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine which squeezes out 310 PS and 380 Nm of torque. VW engineers say that the DSG’s advantage in shift times is compensated by the 20 kg additional weight it brings in. So, they have decided to go for a 6-speed manual gearbox.

The S is lighter than the regular Clubsport by a good 30 kg, thanks to the elimination of rear seats, insulations and several other bits that are not deemed essential. The hatchback also uses aluminium sub-frames, semi-slick tyres, and specially tuned chassis and suspension to achieve maximum on-track performance. The engineers went on to give the car the world’s first “Nurburgring” drive mode which adjusts the chassis setting to suit the track.

The VW Golf GTI Clubsport S is expected to make its public debut at the annual Worthersee festival. Only 400 will be built of which 100 are reserved for Germany and 150 for UK! The rest will be sold in other countries.
