Heads up everyone! We have a new player coming to the Indian automotive market today. Owned by one of the biggest names in the business, Toyota, India now welcomes the renowned luxury brand Lexus. And the very first automobile that the company has chosen to launch in India today is the RX 450h, which is a sports utility vehicle with a hybrid powertrain under the hood.

Let us break down the hybrid powertrain into understandable figures for you. In the Lexus RX 450h, power is harnessed from the combination of a 3.5-litre V6 with VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) tech and a 650V A/C permanent magnet synchronous motor. The petrol motor alone pumps out 262PS of power and 335Nm of torque. The electric motor, on the other hand, generates 68PS of power and 139Nm of torque. As a result, the total power output is capped at 313PS/361Nm. Transmission duties are handled by an e-CVT (Electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission) which is mated to a four-wheel-drive system.

As far as features are concerned, the Lexus RX 450h boasts a 12.3-inch wide-screen multimedia display which provides access to audio, climate control and navigation. Other features include a panoramic sunroof, an optional 835-watt Mark Levinson premium surround sound system, heads-up display, dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system, power-folding rear seats, powered tailgate, 10 airbags and, LED-powered headlamps and daytime running lights.

The Lexus RX 450h will be brought into India via the CBU (completely built unit) route. This translates to a hefty tax on top of the price of the car. We expect it cost over the Rs 1 crore mark. Deliveries for this SUV have already begun. At present, Lexus doesn’t have an operational showroom anywhere in India, but is expected to start with four dealerships, one each at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Gurugram.
