The Mahindra S201, a compact SUV based on the SsangYong Tivoli, is expected to be launched in mid-2018. Mahindra has confirmed that this compact SUV will come powered by 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol and 1.5-litre diesel motors. These engines will be developed in-house by the automaker and it is claimed that they will offer best-in-class performance.

The 1.2-litre turbo petrol motor is essentially the same three-cylinder unit with the same bore and stroke that is seen under the KUV100 but benefits from direct injection and a fairly large turbocharger that will result in a leap of power output to around 140 HP. The Tata Nexon and Maruti Vitara Brezza, in comparison have a power output of 110 HP and 90 HP respectively.

The S201 will also come powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine. This is essentially the 1.2-litre three-cylinder diesel engine that is plonked in the KUV100 but with an extra cylinder. Meeting the ‘compact car’ criteria, this 1.5-litre diesel engine could develop as much as 125 horses, according to sources, thereby giving the S201 an advantage over its competition even with the diesel engine.

The S201 is going to be a sub-four metre compact SUV and will share its underpinnings and most of the interior bits with the SsangYong Tivoli. However, the XUV500-maker will tweak the front fascia to make it look more like a Mahindra than a SsangYong.
