Volkswagen already confirmed in February that the second-generation Tiguan and the new Passat will be introduced in India this year. Both the cars have been spotted testing in the country on several occasions. Moreover, the German automaker started the production of the Tiguan at its facility in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, earlier this month. Volkswagen has now moved a step further and listed the Tiguan on its official website as “coming soon”. This means that the SUV is likely to be launched in coming months.

The second-generation Tiguan is based on the based on the MQB (modular transverse matrix) platform and is one of the most popular SUVs in its segment. It was unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show and will be Volkswagen's second SUV in the Indian market after the Touareg, which was discontinued in 2014.

Under the hood, the SUV will have a 2.0-litre TDI engine mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The power figures haven't been revealed yet; however, as the 4MOTION badge on the shots suggests, the Tiguan is also likely to be offered in an all-wheel-drive configuration. It will compete against the Hyundai Tucson which starts at Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi) and currently does not offer an all-wheel-drive option. It will also compete against the upcoming Jeep Compass and all-new Honda CR-V diesel. Both of them are expected to be launched in the country this year. Due to its local production, the price of the Tiguan will hover around the Rs 20 lakh mark. Volkswagen is also working on a bigger seven-seater variant of the Tiguan, the Allspace, which is likely to make its public debut sometime this year.
