Hyderabad: The Telangana government is gearing up to roll out a comprehensive policy by the end of December this year to incentivise the use of electric vehicles in the State, a senior government official said on Thursday.

“We are almost ready with the policy. The Transport and Municipal Administration departments are examining the policy proposals. We expect to launch the policy by the end of December,” Telangana IT and Industries Secretary Jayesh Ranjan told the media on the sidelines of an event organised by Zoomcar and Mahindra Electric to launch 20 electric self-driving rental cars in Hyderabad.

He further said that the government consulted electric car manufacturers and other stakeholders before drafting the policy which would accelerate the use of electric cars across Telangana. “The policy will also focus on the initiatives to develop ecosystem for electric vehicles such as charging stations,” he said.

Announcing that the much-awaited Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) would be launched in four days, he said efforts would be made to encourage the use of electric vehicles for the last mile connectivity at metro stations.

Meanwhile, Zoomcar, a leading self-driving car rental company, said that its initiative to launch 20 Mahindra e2oPlus cars in Hyderabad was aimed at promoting the sustainable mobility ecosystem in the city.

The Bengaluru-based company launched similar initiative in Mysuru last week with same size fleet. It plans to roll out electric vehicles on its platform in Chandigarh and Delhi soon.

“As of now, we have less than 50 electric vehicles in our fleet. But we want to see 50 per cent of our fleet running on electricity by the time we have 25,000 vehicles in our fleet in two years or so,” Greg Moran, co-founder and CEO, Zoomcar. Currently, Zoomcar operates 3,000 cars across 26 cities. Hyderabad has around 200 Zoomcar vehicles.

The car rental company tied up with Mahindra Electric, the electric car manufacturing arm of Mahindra Group, for the electric car push on its platform. It takes electric cars made by Mahindra Electric on lease from Mahindra Finance.
